Another 21km run completed! But this time round, it wasn't a race for myself -- it was for WL, for her first (and possibly last) half marathon race.
She mentioned that she would want to try out a 21km-race, and that's why I had encouraged her to take up the Sundown version of it, partly because there's no sunshine to worry about.
We started our training regime in late January, using a training schedule that I planned. Slowly, her mileage increased from her previous 5km runs, to eventually 10km runs. Her improvement was significant and I'm sure it was encouraging for both of us.
But soon, she realised that the additional distance above the psychological 10km was hard to beat, and found it taxing. We made changes to the training mileage for the last few weeks and maintained training runs at about 12km long.
Then the Sundown race came. It started pretty well at midnight, and we covered the first hour at quite a comfortable pace. It was after halfway when she started to develop cramps and we had to alternate between walking and slow jogging, especially in the last one-third of the race. With my occasional encouragement and 'pushing', she finally completed the longest race of her life.
Running long distances isn't what she enjoys doing, but I guess she really wanted to have a taste of the one activity that strangely kept me signing up for. Doing one half-marathon would definitely have scared her from the sport, but at least it had got her started with the resolve to do future 10km races. :)
