At the start of 2012, I set myself a target of 4 books. It doesn't seem so reachable now, even with the luxury of time at the moment, because I'm really adopting a very casual reading pace.
I finished reading the first book of the year just about 2 months ago.
《東京鐵塔:我和老媽,有時還有老爸》is a Japanese novel by Lily Franky, but of course, I read the Chinese-translated version. It's an autobiography novel about the relationship between himself and his mother, who had all along been a great part of his life when growing up. The story is relatively a simple one, and that is probably why so many people can relate to it, as most people would be living simple lives as his. I suddenly got reminded of the HK movie 桃姐, as it gave me similar vibes. I like how the author brought me deep into his life, and enabled me to feel like him when the events happened. The last 1/3 of the book dealt largely with how his mother faced cancer. I like it how the author maintained it largely descriptive here and not too 煽情, so readers can inject their own feelings into it.
It was a really good read. I spent 4.5 afternoons over a month or so, so it didn't take too long (though this book from Wenjian had sat in the shelf for years). Simple and touching, it made for great quiet afternoons with a cuppa.
The novel had since been made into TV serials and a movie (Click for the trailer).

I'm currently reading another translated Japanese novel, 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. It comes in 3 books and I've just completed the first. Definitely gripping and addictive, it has already made me want to read his other works. More on it next time.
