The week ended with the finales of my 2 favourite reality TV shows, The Amazing Race 24 and Survivor 28. Great seasons this time. I marvel at how the casts outwit one another every week, and also the lengths that the production crew went to capture all these into the show.
The Amazing Race 24 was an All-stars season, and I liked most of these teams from previous editions. I loved the Europe legs (Italy, Switzerland, Spain and UK) from this season, especially being able to reminisce the places I've been to in eternal city Rome. But I thought some of the tasks in this season were a little easier. Double U-turns were game changers as usual, and a deserving Dave+Connor prevailed to the end. The finish at Las Vegas was epic - parachuting to the finish line - but the lack of a classic memory challenge as the final task was a personal disappointment.
Survivor 28 was a superb season in all aspects. The classification of the 3 initial tribes along the lines of Brain Vs Brawn Vs Beauty made for a wonderful social experiment. This may just be a social game, but seeing how these 3 personal traits played out was pretty intriguing. By the time the final 11 casts made into the merged tribe, I knew it was going to be an epic season. Everyone played their own strategic game, including making comebacks from behind and not giving up. Every tribal council ended with a surprised blindside, which only made me love it more. Kudos to the crew for all the elaborate challenges too -- they kept me excited. At the end, Tony was a truly deserving player, and I thought it would be a closer fight if he was sitting beside Spencer at the final tribal night. I was surprised that Spencer (one of the Brains) actually guessed correctly that it was a 'Final 2' instead of a 'Final 3' finish this season. Too awesome.
Well, I guess no one's really watching these classic reality shows these days? They had been my motivation every Monday and Thursday for the past 13 weeks, and it's going to feel a little empty for a while, before their respective new seasons come back, only in Fall.
