This was my favourite piece that I heard yesterday, being performed at a Lunchtime Concert at the Asian Civilisations Museum. This is so brilliant--performed by a Symphony Orchestra, but totally retained the Chinese Orchestra feel. That was the same contrast that I felt when listening to it yesterday, played by entirely Wind Instruments.

2 weeks ago on a Friday, I came out of an interview in the late morning.
Not wanting to head home yet, I decided to be a local tourist and walked to Chinatown. What followed was a series of 'touristy' activities that I did: Walking the streets of Chinatown; Buying postcards (for Postcrossing); Made a maiden visit to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the museum; Had lunch at the popular Chinatown Food Centre.

Today, another Friday, I came out of another interview in the late morning. As it was still early, I decided to stay in the area. I walked out of the building and the first attraction that caught my eye was the Asian Civilisations Museum. Hence I became a local tourist once again, spending about 2.5 hours in the galleries.
Fascinated by some Islamic art when I visited The British Museum a few months ago, the Islamic art and architecture that were on display at the Special Exhibition gallery today were a little continuation. I definitely did learn something today, as with every trip to any museum.
What made it better, was that there was a Wind Chamber lunchtime concert by students from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. I rarely get the chance to listen to a classical performance done entirely by Wind Instruments, and it was pretty enjoyable. I especially loved the last segment, and while listening to that piece, I can REALLY visualise cultural tribes dancing in the mountains. I looked at the programme list, and yes, the title of the piece was "Dance of the Yaos". By being able to put that very picturesque image into my mind through the power of music, I must say that both the composer (Mao Yuan) and these musicians did a very good job.

2 separate impromptu solo 'local tours' made for pretty nice Friday noons.
I guess that sometimes when you're out alone, you just tend to make fuller use of your own senses. And that is, very satisfying.

《转山》. The closing film for THIS Buddhist Film Festival 2012. The first time I read about this film, was through a report on Zaobao. By the time it was published, that screening was already sold out (within 10 days). Disappointed, I thought I would never get to watch it. A few days later, Pamela informed me about an additional screening and that I should camp online to buy tickets. That was how I managed to get tickets for the additional screening, which was sold out even faster than the first.
The demand for the film is easily understandable. By watching the trailer (Click it!) alone, I got very attracted to the film. Primarily, there are 2 reasons: firstly, I have always wanted to go Tibet; secondly, I have always wanted an adventure. I guess people watch it for different reasons, but I expect many people who were there at the screenings today had reasons largely similar.
《转山》is based on a true story under the same title by 谢旺霖 (Click it!), who made a 2000km bike trip from Lijiang to Tibet, to fulfill his late brother's wish. It was arduous and tough and even life threatening, but it's an inspiration for young people. The film had a worldwide premiere on 2 November 2011, in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet.
It was a touching and inspiring story, but not excessively tear-jerking. But there were very touching scenes that the director did well:
1. When the main character had to leave the young Tibetan boy whom he met and stayed with for 1 night. The boy had asked him “哥哥，你什么时候再回来？" Just like how the main character will never meet his late brother again, that farewell would likely be forever.
2. When the main character found a long-distance call service deep in harsh-winter Tibet, he made a call. It was to his late brother's number, directed to a voicemail. It was here when he found the motivation again, 'telling' his late brother over voicemail that he will complete the journey for him.
Definitely so. The movie followed the long route from Lijiang to Tibet, and oh my, the views of the mountains were breathtakingly awesome.
2. “自由行走，激发都市白领“出逃”欲望？
每一个身处城市囹圄中的人，都会有类似去西藏这样的梦想。。。” and “《转山》的男主角张书豪其实就是个符号，他代表了大部分梦想远方并跃跃欲试，不过还未成行的都市人，但坐在影院里的两个小时，张书豪已经代替每一个观众，提前上路了……。”
Speaks my mind. Which city dweller does not want to just "put everything down" and leave? Tibet is one place I'll visit. And yes, there are many unfulfilled epic trips that I really hope to make. And yet there's always no better time than "now".
