Over the Mayday long weekend, there was a competition, 寻找星声音, organised by MediaCorp's Chinese Radio stations, to search for the next star DJ.
Edged on by WL to give it a try (knowing that being a DJ was a childhood dream), I gamely turned up on the first day of the competition, and collected my bib number. I was the 26th contestant, which was a comfortable number, because I could see how the first 25 people underwent the process, and yet not too long into the competition for the judges to be bored.
The competition involved each contestant to go up the stage at oneKM mall, do a self-introduction, and then read off a randomly-assigned paragraph of text, and then possibly answer any questions that the judges may ask.
Some of the contestants did pretty well, had great voices and had the X-Factor. Some were obviously very nervous and had shaky hands. There were also some that sounded very ang-moh-pai, and some that sounded with too heavy China accent.
By the time it was my turn, I didn't feel as nervous as I had expected myself to be. I did a very short introduction of myself (which on hindsight, I should have prolonged it the way that I had prepared the night before), and then subsequently went on to read my assigned 新闻稿. I was given a brief amount of time before going up the stage to practise reading the piece of news. But when I was finally on stage, I misread a word and ended up with a slight pause and a little blunder, which I was a little disappointed with. Then, the judges asked me about my current job and I answered with less-than-perfect delivery. Afterall, it wasn't usual explaining what I do in Chinese.
This entire on-stage process lasted only probably 3 minutes, but it was one experience that I would probably relish. Taking part in an open audition with hundreds of pairs of eyes looking and judging from all around, was definitely not something that I would have envisioned myself to have the courage to do in the past. (And probably not something I would do again in future too). But there I was, I went up, I stayed my cool, and I let my voice resonated in the shopping mall.
On that day of the competition, there were 111 contestants. Not surprisingly, I didn't make it to the Top 6 to proceed to the next round, but I know I was really there to just have fun. It probably wasn't the normal kind of fun, but you really need to experience it to know it.
Thanks WL for the support and for believing that I had the potential.
