It was a pretty nice day for some cycling with 2 other Navy bros YX and Cham. YX's a budding bike enthusiast and was thus the organiser.
After a hearty breakfast at Changi Village, we crossed the waters and set foot on the rustic Pulau Ubin. We began with the Eastern part of the island. Though I'm not totally foreign to the island, it was only my first time at Chek Jawa Wetlands. We did not really see much there, probably the timing wasn't right. I probably saw more rubbish in the mangroves and more foreign workers enjoying their day off.
It's been quite many years since I last cycled in Pulau Ubin, and it somehow felt that things are a little different now.. I can't really recall much, so I can't really pinpoint to what's so different. Did they do something to the roads? Or the trails? Those felt a little less rugged or raw now. Or was it the many little developments here and there? I saw an upcoming development that resembles a typical Bintan/Bali chalet resort. Or was it the slowly-increasing visitor population there? I saw quite many foreign workers and caucasian tourists.. Or perhaps just a lack of familiarity..
We went to the Western part of the island as well, and attempted 2 of the biking trails in the Ketam Mountain Bike Park. On the lousy rental bike that I'd got, I really had to be extra wary on the bumpy trails and slopes, so it wasn't as fun as it could potentially be. And then it soon started raining too, so we raced all the way back to the jetty area.
Cycling's always fun and to do it in a secluded part of Singapore made it even better. I might actually be researching on good cycling holiday spots too, so any suggestions are welcome!
