Just when everyone else is deciphering what good can the 2010 Budget possibly bring for us, the average Singaporean, there is SOMETHING that goes unreported in the state media.
And that is, the further pay rise that the country's top brains are receiving this fiscal year.
I can understand your shock when reading this, because the Prime Minister is already earning FIVE TIMES MORE than the annual salary of US President. In fact, the top 30 highest paid politicians are all Singaporean Ministers--all of them earn much more than the US President, even though their responsibilities are much, much less than him. And, these official paychecks do not include their allowances as an MP, and their other sources of income, from taking up portfolios in government-linked agencies.
So here comes their percentage increase this year: 8.8%. Lucky lucky number!! Yes, it was 'justified' that their pay structure is pegged to the country's GDP. And in the long run, GDP increases. Isn't it a safe and secure way to ensure the pockets get deeper and fatter?

"Salaries for political appointments – ministers, ministers of state and parliamentary secretaries – are estimated to be $58.28 million, or 8.8 per cent higher than last year."

If I happen to be the owner of the S$10 million this Friday, here's probably how I will split the windfall:
28% to my Papa
28% to my Mama
18% as donations to the community & less fortunate
18% as savings/investments
8% as enjoyment with friends and relatives
HUAH AH!
