第18届新加坡金曲奖
Some of us in the concert-going circle won tickets from Fruit Tree Fresh (again!) and so we made it to yet another edition of the Singapore Hit Awards.
The guest list for this year was slightly better than average. Though there was a lack of more popular bands (only MP 魔幻力量) and more A-listers in the industry, they managed to secure relatively big names from Hong Kong, with the likes of 草蜢、莫文蔚、何韵诗、张智霖。Very notably, the most well-received star of the night was 张智霖, certainly helped by the popularity of the crazily-hot drama 冲上云霄II. His appearance on stage attracted the female audience to swarm towards him. He did [歲月如歌], the theme song of 冲上云霄I.
Among the performances, I totally enjoyed local Acappella group Micappella's segment. I was also engrossed in 周蕙's classics, and was awed by 莫文蔚's classy performance with a Guzheng. 草蜢 also performed 2 nostalgic numbers that ended the night with a high.

On another note, it was also the 第50届金马奖 weekend, which attracted much interest from Singapore because of nominations for 6 major awards for [爸妈不在家] (Ilo Ilo), the best-ever performance from Singapore in the prestigious awards in the Chinese movie industry.
Having already been internationally-recognized in 40 film festivals over the past few months, I had expected some wins at 金马奖, but had not expected a sweep of 4 major awards, including the Best Feature Film, Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.
Yeo Yann Yann, the female lead, had actually opted to be submitted as a Supporting Actress for 金马奖, knowing that the Female Lead award would be highly competitive. The strategy paid off.
Winning 最佳剧情片 (Best Feature Film) was the highlight of the night, and it surprised the movie industry, because the award has never left Taiwan/Hong Kong/China, and the hot favourites for this year's award were [一代宗师] (by 王家卫) and [天注定] (by 贾樟柯). This meant that "Ilo Ilo" now shares the same elevated status as previous winners like [色,戒], [無間道], [星星月亮太陽], [小城故事]...
I liked how effectively bilingual Anthony Chen was, and reminding the world that there is still a Chinese entertainment industry hidden in tiny Singapore. It was absolutely heartwarming, when he mentioned “新加坡电影加油,华人电影加油!”
人生是黑白的.
