Phantom of the Opera. I caught it more than a week ago. It's too well-known and world-famous for me to miss it when it's (currently) here in Singapore. Furthermore, it's the 3rd time (I think) that they're staging the musical here in our shores, and it'd probably be many many years before they're coming back again.
Being the longest-running musical on record, it must have good reasons. It wasn't hard to see why.
The stage effects were brilliant. The famous lake scene (where Phantom brought Christine on a boat ride) was so charmingly presented and I'm sure it captivated the audience. I absolutely loved the seamless changeovers of the scenes and how the transitions were so well-thought out. (Oh yes, and how Phantom vanished at the end.)
The music and vocals were top-class. You get nothing less than perfect when the performers were hitting all the high notes of the opera -- strong and powerful. The success of this musical can be felt, by having heard of so many of the songs before, even when this was my first time watching the musical. (I've got a few songs in my playlist since eons ago). Great songs, great vocals and great performance by the live Orchestra, which was made up of mostly local talents. Thumbs up!
I confess that I did some homework by reading up the synopsis online before the show started. It did help me in following the story as it unfolded, especially the first half, to grasp the special relationship between Phantom and Christine. For people who do not have any prior exposure to Phantom of the Opera, you may consider reading up a little too.
Do catch this musical soon, as it must end 3 weeks later, at Marina Bay Sands Theatre! It's a must-go, no matter how cheap your seats are! (Yes, I was sitting right at the top, on the 2nd last row of the entire theatre).
人生是黑白的.
