The euphoria of submitting FYP report early this week was great. I had been on early CNY holiday mood since then.
But this entry's dedicated to Wicked. Prior to watching, I've heard, read and seen many positive comments and reviews about the broadway musical, billing it as the 'Best musical of the decade'. It was easy to see why.
The stage sets and effects were detailed and exquisite. There were parts of the show when I actually silently said 'Wow' in admiration.
The dances were nice. I guess the standard for Broadway musicals really doesn't deviate much from the very top quality. I made it a point to take notice of not just the main leads, but also the other dancers, and I realised that at times, everyone has their own movements and positions, which added depth to the overall performance.
The main leads had superb vocals. One thing I really admire and respect about musical performers, is that they perform every day without fail, and yet their vocals are still forceful, strong and on-pitch. It helps that the songs for the musical were really nice. "Popular" really made the atmosphere cheery and happy; I could feel the determination and urge of the Witch in "Defying gravity"; and when the touching "For good" was sung, I could feel the sisterly love between them.
The plot's with depth. Being totally unfamiliar with the "Wizard of Oz", this prelude to the fable was even more foreign to me. I had to open my ears and listened extra attentively to try to catch the plot. It wasn't too hard to follow the general story, but some questions had to be left unanswered until I sought help from Wikipedia. The idea that there's more plot than many other musicals, made it an even more worthwhile one.
So if you've not caught this award-winning Broadway musical, please do so by 1st April, before it's gone, For Good.
