I was dining with 2 friends at a nearby Astons before Karaoke. We sat down next to a table of a lady, who seemed to be in her 60s.
During one of the pauses in our conversation, I casually glanced over her direction and she asked a weird question.
"Are you a foreigner?"
"Er, no? We're all locals here."
"Then why, why are you all speaking in Chinese?!?#!@"
For a few split seconds, I don't know whether to feel more happy or sad. Happy, because we're all effectively bilingual. Sad, because the way she posed the question seemed to suggest that it's either uncool to speak in Chinese, or that younger Singaporeans like us are no longer doing it.
I didn't want to make a sarcastic reply nor wanted to offend this English-educated old lady.
"Oh, we're all used to it.."
The only good thing was, she ended the awkward conversation by saying that I have very nice teeth.
人生是黑白的.
