If you're a follower of this blog, it isn't hard to realise that unlike concerts, the movies that I watch rarely get a dedicated entry here. [那些年, 我们一起追的女孩] is definitely one of the rare ones.
You see, our cinemas are flooded with blockbuster sci-fi movies, superhero themes or horror films. Yes, I watch these for the action, computerised technology, and well, the opportunity to fantasize in magical worlds.
And there are definitely times, when I welcome films that I can truly identify with. [那些年, 我们一起追的女孩] is totally one that all of us, male/female/young/old can relate to. There are no superhero actions nor CGIs, but it wins hands down in the plot--one that no matter who you are, it describes you, your experiences and triggers your memories.
It's a simple story about growing up, school days, friendships, dreams, and love. What it differs from other similar stories, is that it will feel strangely familiar to you, no matter that it was based on a Taiwanese setting. You see, the vulgarities that were said; the issues that were faced; and more importantly, the underlying message about missed chances--they are all part of what you must have experienced when growing up. (Side note: I enjoyed this movie more than HP7.)
I caught the sneak preview last night, ahead of the 10 November premiere in Singapore. Prior to this, I had long heard about how the film took Taiwan by storm in August, breaking records. And when it recently aired in Hong Kong, it generated a fever over the movie, breaking records again in 4 days. That has certainly kept me hyped up about the movie. Though I doubt it would take over Singapore in a similar level as that in Taiwan/Hong Kong, I'm already seeing many Facebook friends talking about it now, 2 weeks ahead of premiere.
I must say that I was more drawn to the theme song [那些年] by 胡夏 initially, when it debut in August. Personally, I view it as 胡夏's best single so far. It is a winning melody on its own, but it's brought up to another level with 胡夏's vocals. And now, after catching the movie, the lyrics all seem to have another meaning altogether. It's now my new favourite song this 2nd half of the year!
I won't be elaborating on the story nor the cast now, so as not to spoil it for you, if you're going to watch it. Highly recommended, I promise!
