I caught Kit Chan's concert at Marina Bay Sands Grand Theater on Thursday with 9 other concert-going friends. A worthy point to make, is that ever since we enlarged our "concert-going" circle and incorporated new friends we made, Thursday was quite a record turnout of 10. Although we sat quite far from the stage and could not see her expressions, I'm sure none of us left without being wowed by Kit.

Watching her performance at MBS, I had a little thought: Not everyone could do it there. The 2100-seater Grand Theater allows for intimate interaction between performer and audience. Kit managed this part excellently. Moreover, venues like MBS and The Esplanade have got some "Arty", "Classy" and "Reserved" connotations, these places will not satisfy singers who relish screams and cheers. However, applause could be heard all too often, coming from impressed audience by her rich vocals. She certainly was able to "hold 得住" there.

I watched her performed in February with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and again in April, during Tanya's concert. So there's already some building-up of anticipation. She certainly didn't disappoint again. In fact, I noticed the effort when she sang a French song "Je ne veux pas travailler (I don't want to work)", in which her moves and positionings were perfectly synced with the spotlight effects. She unleashed her "Drama Mama" gene during some of the songs at the early segment, bringing some laughter to the audience.

Some memorable parts of the show included an unplugged segment, where she performed snippets of some of her classic songs. There was also an entertaining interaction betwen Kit Chan and Jimmy Ye (叶良骏) before she went on to sing a song written by him for the late Leslie Cheung (张国荣). Her language prowess was showcased during the concert, by speaking and singing in 3 languages: English, Chinese and Cantonese.

Interestingly, her 2nd last song before the Encore, was 《心痛》，and when the music came on, the audience cheered. It was definitely one of the songs when she said at the start, that "有些歌，如果我没唱，我不能活着走出去。" Indeed, it got everyone into karaoke mode. Another notable song was one of the final ones, when she did a new rendition of "Home", by combining her version with Michael Buble's "Home" brilliantly.

It was undeniably a good concert, where she sang all the classics that the audiences had missed for too long, and also some of her renditions of songs by other singers. She was able to entertain the crowd time and again, bringing fresh laughter and ensuring no dry moments. She made us all "feel" the concert instead of merely "watching"--and that really made me enjoy every second of it. There were no elaborate sets, no fireworks nor stage effects, not many costumes nor special guests. But look, a truly good concert does not depend on all those side attractions. Kit Chan, being the undisputable local queen, pulled it off well and ended it perfectly.
