Just caught my 2nd musical this year. The Lion King really deserves all the praises and recommendations that I've been hearing. Just 3 months ago, I caught a shorter 30-min version at the Hong Kong Disneyland. That was enough to keep me looking forward to this lengthier version.
-Firstly, the costumes were elaborate and detailed. I was awed by practically all the animals--how they were presented and controlled, and also how they moved. Prior to watching the musical, I thought that humans won't really be able to 'act' well as animal characters. I was so wrong.
-Secondly, the vocals of the characters were great. Of course, being able to sing is a fundamental requirement of a performer, but being able to draw the audience into the mood of the atmosphere is not-so-easy. They really hit all the right notes.
-Thirdly, the symphonic band was wonderful. Although they were hidden beneath the stage, all the pieces were tastefully presented; aptly arranged and powerful.
-Fourthly, the songs were familiar and nostalgic. Thinking about The Lion King definitely rings up the many classic songs from the movie. And hearing them all being performed once again on stage is a luxury.
-Fifthly, I simply loved the stage effects. Kudos to the props and logistics as well. Throughout the musical, I could hear myself "Wow-ing" at the props and backdrops. The stage had many hidden mechanical surprises. Definitely a value-add.
I think every cent of what I paid was worth it. Before I catch "Wicked" in 3 months' time, "The Lion King" is currently the Best Musical I've watched so far. I've a feeling that watching musicals might be an additional source of monetary output, as long as the organisers bring in World-class musicals like these.
