It was the 3rd night of rallies. This time round, not just dressed in a blue shirt and holding a blue party flag, I brought along a mini Singapore flag as well. I reached only at 9pm, and spent 10 minutes trying to squeeze myself through into the bursting Bedok Stadium.
By then I couldnt catch most of the speeches by the candidates for East Coast GRC, and the spot that I stood at, wasn't a good spot for audibility. I'd perhaps have to catch them online.
What was important, in my opinion, was Low Thia Khiang's speech at the end.
1. On WP's disappearance act?
"With the government redrawing boundaries every election at their whim and fancy, having the Sengkang West SMC and Punggol East SMC only carved out recently, how are we to “appear” in a previously non-existent ward?"
2. On unfairness of the system.
a) "We have applied for such permit before to hold dialogue session and forums with residents at the void decks. Our application was rejected."
b) "The HDB also rented the premises to PCF with cheap rental, which the PCF in turn sublets with low rental from the HDB to the PAP to set up their branch at each constituency. That is why you can see PAP branches all over Singapore but there is no Workers’ Party branch, even in Hougang where I was elected. I have to sit at the void deck to conduct meet-the-people sessions while PAP MPs conduct them in air-con rooms."
c) "People’s Association. It is funded by the government, headed by the PM and its Board of Directors is made up of PAP appointees. They run all the grassroots organisations, including the Resident Committees and Community Clubs, making sure that the opposition is kept out of the grassroots in terms of the institutional structure."
d) "Opposition MPs are not allowed to make use of Community club facilities to organize course or activities for residents but PAP MPs are free to do so. I thought Community clubs are meant for the community, not to propel the PAP’s interests? "
