Had yet another good discussion with Papa on GE-related issues.
Today we analysed WP's decision to let Yee Jenn Jong and Gerald Giam to be NCMPs. We both agreed that it was very very wise, and Eric Tan should really not have taken the issue too personally.
Granted, he was the only candidate that stood in East Coast GRC for both 2006 and 2011, and had put in effort in the cause. But he should look further. WP has much longer-term visions, and it makes perfect sense to groom a younger candidate and put him under the limelight, so that he will be in a much stronger position to battle in East Coast in 5 years' time.
To be honest, when it was clear that someone from the East Coast GRC team would be offered an NCMP post, I knew it had to be Gerald Giam. You need not search too far back to conclude that. He was the representative for WP in the English political debate on Channel NewsAsia many weeks ago. He had also released Press statements during the hot campaigning period, to rebut allegations by the ruling party. He's a blogger too, HERE.
My Papa thinks it's strategic to keep young, qualified candidates close to the party as well. Given the post of an NCMP, it wouldn't be possible for him to 'jump ship' for the next 5 years. Good for the party in retaining talents. Furthermore, the limelight given to the NCMPs (if they perform well), will help add credibility to the candidate, which will serve the candidates and the party well in the next election. Look at the successful case of Sylvia Lim.
Now that my 2 favourite new candidates in the party are entering the Parliament too, we can look forward to more robust debates and discussions. I wish them well.
