The Inaugural Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was spectacular. I promise to dedicate a separate entry to it soon, with photos.
Although I spotted minor hiccups and witnessed some 冷场, I think the people behind the opening ceremony did a good job at controlling and cue-ing the thousands of performers. One 'chapter' after another, each with hundreds of people in all kinds of costumes, the entire programme management right till the last detail must have been a mind-boggling task.
I liked the first few 'chapters', which told a little of Singapore's beginnings, from a tiny fishing village, to the early influx of immigrants from India and China; to the arrival of 'monsters' etc. It was very uniquely Singaporean, including the incorporation of childhood songs and games that people used to play before the age of Computers. And then there was the usual Olympics protocol--Parade of flags / Singing of Olympic theme song / The Olympic Anthem / IOC President's Speech / Oath-taking / Fireworks / Lighting of flame on the main cauldron. The latter was the climax, which saw the flame on a phoenix, accompanied by dragonboats. Phoenix + Dragon already spell out the most auspicious combination possible. Oh ya, there were laser components / fire performances and even firecrackers too!
I'll post the photos/videos up soon.
