933 is my favourite station, especially having exposed to the station for more than 12 years. And my favourite time slot is usually the night shift.
My memory goes as far as listening to Zhou Chong Qing and ex-DJ Zhou Hanmin's “双周末夜”. The exact year was so far away that I REALLY cannot remember anymore. ChongQing was still quite a newbie then, and was nicknamed 小叮当。
Then I supposed there was a little gap after that, and the next significant night shift programme was hosted by Xu Zhen Rong. That was when he built up a strong colony of radio fans, and popularised the night programme. He left for TV in 2002.
I couldn't remember who took over after that, but vaguely remembered ex-DJ Shihan, who did a good job too.
Subsequent weeknight programmes were also hosted by Mary, Cavin, Lingzhi, Peifen, Jiahui, Jiafa and ChongQing. Of which, I was a little saddened when Lingzhi left her weeknight programme, as she was arguably one of the better DJs. Then again, last week, when Chongqing left his weeknight programme for an afternoon slot, many fans were sad and for the entire week, the sms portal during his show was flooded with sms-es about how unwilling they want the change. To reciprocate, Chongqing voluntarily stayed for an additional hour on air to take more calls/sms.
I'm saying all these, because after listening to weeknight programmes for more than a decade, I have developed for myself a preferred ear for certain kinds of hosting style and programme outline. To me, a personal touch is paramount, instead of being generic and empty. DJs like Chongqing score high on that. I feel that being a late-night programme DJ, the DJ must get into the 'right mood' to blend in with the quiet surroundings, with the addition of a personal flavour.
I've just decided to increase my frequency of listening to the night programme in 1003. The underdog station is known for their 'personal touch'. And tonight, they've proved it further. Earlier in the evening, an anxious listener called in to report that his autistic child got lost. The station began to request listeners to look out for the person, with repeated descriptions for the child. Still no news of the child by 1130pm, the DJ decided to extend an hour of work on-air, so that he can still continue to request for help on-air, and at the same time, receive any potential good news from listeners. So the programme ended only at 1am. Such effort is beyond a DJ's call of duty, and should be highly lauded.
Furthermore, since favourite DJ is now in the afternoon slot, it's not too much of an opportunity cost to tune out of my favourite station's night programme, sometimes.
