I noticed an event listing at my constituency, about an upcoming community event that aims to create a record for 'Most number of handprints on T-shirts by youths'. (or something phrased like that).
I think Singaporeans are way too obsessed with record-creating and record-breaking.
Just visit the Singapore Book of Records, and you'd realise the sheer number of stupid records created, under the various categories.
To me, most of the records created, are meaningless, value-less, and has no benefit to the community, or anything. You don't even get fame out of it--perhaps one kind media will give a small write-up for you, and that's it, nobody discusses about it, nor anyone remembers your 'feat'.
Not unless it's a more news-worthy or memory-worthy record, like the Tallest/Richest/Wealthiest etc. But records like 'Fastest To Eat Nine Ice Creams' or 'Most Number Of Folded Paper Frogs' or 'Most Number Of People Doing An Indian Aerobic Dance' just don't bear any value.
Fine, perhaps in the process of these stupid records, there's a fund-raising effort involved, but why can't the organisers use a more meaningful way to achieve this purpose? Or perhaps, tie this up with meaningful efforts related to the Environment, say 'Most number of people doing tree-planting' or 'Greatest amount of recyclables collected from an estate' etc? At least there's a value involved here, and Environmental Awareness is achieved.
Back to this upcoming event in my constituency. This is targetted at youths, and I'm sure it's somehow related to Youth Day celebrations, going by the date of the event. I seriously think youths should be engaged in more meaningful activities, rather than merely doing handprints on T-shirts, which I doubt anyone's going to wear them anyway. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be any significance in this event. There's no mentioning of fund-raising for charities.
On a side note, after creating this record for 'Most number of handprints on T-shirts by youths', who knows, we may even be seeing the following:
'Most number of handprints on T-shirts by adults'
'Most number of handprints on T-shirts by senior citizens'
'Most number of footprints on T-shirts by youths'
'Most number of thumbprints on T-shirts by youths'
'Most number of handprints on singlets by youths'
'Most number of ...................................'
Yes the list goes on.
When are we getting 'Most number of records created by a country'?
人生是黑白的.
