I've just watched Singapore's most successful musical--Forbidden City: Portrait of an empress.
This has got to be my first time watching a performance at the Esplanade, and enjoying the quality sound system and the classy facade.
This musical is currently playing for its 3rd run, back by popular demand after performing in 2002, 2003. And it will very likely embark on a world tour in the near future. And with just one week till its last staging on 30 Sept, its still Full House tonight.
I reckon that most are drawn by Kit Chan's strongly powerful and clear vocals, which attracted resounding applause. Nevertheless, the other leading angmoh actress and angmoh actor, were both great as well. The story of Empress Dowager Cixi, was told through the eyes of an American painter, who was invited to paint a portrait of Cixi. She was able to uncover the deepest untold secrets of Cixi, the side of her that the world doesnt know. It shows the 'truth' beneath her tyrant reputation, depicting her of a woman who yearns to be loved and a mother who fights for her son.
2 humourous figures appear in the show now and then--Hossan Leong and Sebastian Tan, and they served to lighten the atmosphere with their witty narration and comical actions. And i thought the props and costumes were nice too. I really applaud Dick Lee for producing a musical of such quality, and the effort by the entire cast. Of course, the musicians that put up all the wonderful music pieces won my heart as well. I have an affinity for music played using Chinese instruments (zhong guo feng), and hence some of the music really made me mesmerized in them.
All in all, i was satisfied with it. This is even though I was sitting on the 3rd storey, and was quite unable to see the emotions and expressions on the cast's faces. But, everything else compensated for that, and i feel that, spending time and money on this show was definitely justifiable. That's taken from my seat.
Now, with whom did i have the honour to watch it with?
And Eric as well. Eric bought the soundtrack cd immediately after the musical. Hopefully he is kind enough to lend me the soundtrack when we meet again. OK?
